TURA: The higher secondary results for Science and Commerce in Garo Hills have shocked the premier schools in the region that have records of good performance.
Don Bosco College in Tura, which includes its 10+2 section, has many times in the past brought laurels by bagging top positions on the state list.
“We had expected some good results this year but unfortunately it didn’t happen. Our students who appeared in the examinations were very optimistic. Our teachers are analysing the results,” said Principal of Don Bosco Rev. Fr. George Plathottam.
Despite the disappointment of not making it to a berth in the state list, Fr Plathottam said there was a positive side to the results as well with tribal students doing exceedingly well in this year’s HSSLC Science examination as the highest overall and Mathematics marks went to tribal students.
Lawanaibok Kharpuli of St. Anthony’s Higher secondary School, Shillong, was the topper with an overall marks of 468.
The highest marks for Mathematics went to Steward Pastieh Pakma of Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School in Jowai who secured a staggering 98 marks.
Loyola Higher Secondary School and College in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, which came up barely seven years ago and is run by the Jesuit fathers, also found a place in the highest marks criteria in Commerce with Rikchi Rongmuthu Sangma securing the highest in Garo MIL subject (82).
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Fr. Sunny Augustine of Loyola College agreed that there had been some setback as far as the results were concerned.
“The questions were not too hard and our students and teachers also said that it were prepared based on the syllabus. Clearly, we need to improve and prepare our students for higher performance,” said Fr Augustine.
“As far as difficulty level was concerned there was none but we need to focus on improvement level. It is a challenging experience for all of us,” said the Loyola educationist.
