St Anthony’s rules with 15 rank holders in Science & Commerce

SHILLONG/TURA: St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, for the first time bagged the first nine spots in Science in the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) Examinations, the results of which were declared on Monday.
The school also secured six spots from fourth to ninth in Commerce.
The Science toppers from St. Antony’s in order of merit are Lawanaibok Kharphuli, Sneha Deb Roy, Bishal Deb, Ryan Jordan L Mawlong, Unizia Kharchandy, Frisky Marngar, Raj Paul, Sanjeeda Yasmin and Bhaskar Brata Rakshit.
Other city schools also performed well. Kavita Joshi of Seven Set Annexe Higher Secondary School is the topper in Commerce.
Purnima Paul of Nongthymmai Nepali Higher Secondary School and Rohit Das of Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School are second and third, respectively, in Commerce.
There are two more rank holders from Laban Bengalee – Manak Sharma, who shares the 8th spot with St Anthony’s Vishaka Sethia in Commerce, and Shubhankar Chowdhury (Science) is 10th.
Fancy Mary Pdang of St Mary’s Higher Secondary School and Jasmeet Kaur Tedwal of St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School share the ninth spot in Commerce. Bayolin Mawiong of Christian Academy Higher Secondary School is 10th.
The pass percentage in Science is 76.76, the highest in the last five years, and that in Commerce is 71.87, which is marginally higher than last year (70.60) but lower than 2015 (72.32), which was the highest in the last five years.
In the vocational stream, the pass percentage is 100 as all the seven students passed.
Among the districts, the Garo Hills region has put up a poor show with no candidate on the top 10 list in either Science or Commerce.
The pass percentage in Science in South West Garo Hills at 91.30 per cent is the highest among the districts followed by East Khasi Hills at 81.64 per cent. However, the number of candidates in Science in South West Garo Hills was only 23 of whom 21 passed.
East Khasi Hills has the highest number of candidates (2,135) in Science of whom 1,743 passed.
The pass percentage in other districts are West Khasi Hills 75.44 per cent, Ri Bhoi 65.35 per cent, West Garo Hills 66.09 per cent, East Garo Hills 34.29 per cent, South Garo Hills 64.29 per cent, South West Khasi Hills 68.24 per cent, West Jaintia Hills 76.08 per cent, East Jaintia Hills 64.10 per cent and North Garo Hills 76.36 per cent.
There were only 14 students in Science from South Garo Hills and out of them, nine have passed.
In Commerce, the pass percentage is 60 for West Khasi Hills, 78.33 for Ri Bhoi, 61.74 for West Garo Hills, 82.93 for East Garo Hills, 83.33 for South West Khasi Hills, 56.82 for West Jaintia Hills, 83.10 for East Jaintia Hills, 59.09 for North Garo Hills and 73.92 for East Khasi Hills.
There were no Commerce candidates in South Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills.
From among the institutions in Tura, Don Bosco College (higher secondary section) with the highest number of candidates (161) in Science recoded a pass percentage of 73. In Commerce, altogether 118 candidates appeared and the pass percentage is 66.
The pass percentage in Science (52 candidates) at Tura Government Higher Secondary School is 52 and in Commerce it is 59.

From Garo Hills institutes, Jasmin Begum of Tikrikilla Higher Secondary School (Assamese MIL 86) and Mou Sarkar (Bengali MIL 86), Silchira R. Sangma (Garo MIL 83) and Sintera M. Sangma (Geography 72), all from Don Bosco College secured the highest marks in Science.
In Commerce, Rikchi Rongmuthu Sangma of Loyola Higher Secondary School, Williamnagar, with 82 marks in Garo MIL secured the highest marks.
Girls outshine boys
Like previous years, female candidates performed better than their male counterparts in both the streams.
In Science, the total number of regular students who passed the examination is 2,646 (males 1,267 and females 1,379) out of a total of 3,370. The total pass percentage is 78.52 (78.16 per cent for males and 78.85 per cent for females).
In non-regular category, the number of students who passed are 165 (male 97 and female 68) out of the total 292 students appeared. Hence the total pass percentage stood at 76.76.
In Commerce, out of the total 2,193 students appeared, 1,576 passed. The break-up of pass percentage of regular students is 70.37 male and 82.90 female, while that of non regular students is 44.02 per cent male and 56.16 per cent female.
