SHILLONG: It was finally time for the State’s HSSLC students to bask in the glory of success and enjoy the fruits of all the hard work put in for months. The result day brought with it a bag full of joy for the successful ones who were humbled by the experience.
Also partaking of the happiness were the heads of the institutions which figured in the position holders’ list. The respective principals were all praise for their wards and teachers for the achievements.
HSSLC Science stream topper Lawanaibok Kharphuli from St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School thanked God for the success and expressed his desire to pursue MBBS course.
The soft spoken Kharpuli, who still prefers books to the internet, wants to help his family and the society by becoming a doctor.
Kharpuli, who does not use a mobile phone yet, never put restrictions on his studying hours during the preparations.
“We should be ready to challenge our limits,” he said.
His school, St Anthony’s secured all the top nine ranks in the Science stream and a delighted principal Surjit Tigga SDB thanked the teachers, guardians and the entire “St. Anthony’s family for creating an enriching environment for the school to succeed”.
Speaking to reporters after the results were announced on Monday, he said, “For four years, we have been making it to the top ten ranks and this year we secured the first nine ranks. They (the students) have made us proud. They have put in their best efforts. It is the fruit of their hard work.”
He also lauded the teachers who have been assisting the students.
“I am grateful to the dedicated teachers. They not only teach lessons but values. They are there during times of celebration and sorrow,” he said while also appreciating the efforts put in by the parents and guardians.
Meanwhile, the 10th position was secured by Subhankar Chowdhury of Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School.
A Science “student by accident”, Chowdhury, a die-hard Manchester United fan, did well to make his school proud. “I want to go for Mass communications… I studied science as my parents wanted me to,” he said without mincing words.
The principal of the school, which also secured the 3rd and 8th positions in the Commerce stream, was jubilant over the results.

The Principal, Rinku Bhattacharjee, attributed the success to the staff and students of the school.
She, however, said that there is a need on the part of the government to take steps to improve Mathematics and English at the SSLC level so that the students can perform better in HSSLC examinations.
Commerce rank holder from the school Rohit Das, meanwhile, said he aims to be a Chartered Accountant. He acknowledged the teachers’ support and guidance.
First position holder from Commerce stream, Kavita Joshi, brought delight to Seven Set Annexe Higher Secondary School which is celebrating its golden jubilee.
“It is a gift for golden jubilee. It is a gold medal for us,” a delighted principal KB Warjri said.
Warjri also pointed out that despite all constraints, students should believe in healthy competition.
Meanwhile, the second rank holder in Commerce stream, Purnima Paul from Nongthymmai Nepali Higher Secondary School, was also overjoyed with the result. She too aims to pursue a course in chartered accountancy.
She said that she would pursue degree course in Commerce and would look to opt for chartered accountancy. However, financial constraints prove a major hurdle for her.
“The courses are expensive. I will pursue B.Com and I will see what to do,” she added.
Principal of the school, Satyam Gurung said, “This is the third time that the school secured a position. The school celebrates its diamond jubilee this August and the rank is like a bonus point for the institution.”
