SHILLONG/NONGSTOIN: The 24-year-old man, who was arrested in Mairang in West Khasi Hills on Monday, allegedly killed his seven-year-old niece after she resisted his sexual advances.
Police said on Tuesday they are interrogating the accused, Balajied Kyrpang Nongrum, who has confessed to killing the girl, for more details.
They are also waiting for the postmortem report to ascertain whether the girl was raped before she was murdered.
Nongrum, who has to give his statement before the magistrate, was sent to three-day police custody on Tuesday.
The incident happened at Umthied Bynther village on Sunday and the girl’s body was found wrapped in a plastic bag on Monday.
The police have registered a case under Sections 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal code. When asked about cases under the POCSO Act, the police said they have to ascertain whether Nongrum raped the seven-year-old girl.
The girl went missing after returning from church service on Sunday afternoon. When she did not come back in the evening, her parents started looking for her.
The girl’s parents did not suspect Nongrum initially because he was helping the family find the girl and was also present when her body was found.
Later, villagers found blood in his residence and started questioning him. He tried to escape but was held by police and the villagers.
