SHILLONG: The construction work for the proposed shopping complex in Polo will take off shortly. Informing this here on Wednesday, Urban Affairs Minister Ronnie V Lyngdoh said that an expression of interest for the project will be called soon.
Lyngdoh also informed that an extensive master plan has been prepared for the proposed shopping complex which will extend till Polo junction.
He added that the government aims to make the Polo shopping complex a unique one in the city where “people can come and spend some quality time’. “We want to make the market in a way that young people can sit and relax after shopping like what is seen in bigger malls outside the State. As of today hardly any shopping complex in the city offer this (luxury to the people),” he said.
The idea of having a shopping complex was made possible after the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) and the East Khasi Hills district administration demolished several shops in Polo market in accordance with the High Court of Meghalaya verdict passed in favour of the State Government few years back.
Lyngdoh pointed out that traders made to vacate the area to pave way for the shopping complex will be rehabilitated.
