SHILLONG: The State needs medical colleges to produce more specialists so that the shortage of doctors at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) can be addressed, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has said.
Reacting to a query about derecognition of post graduation courses at the premiere institute, Sangma told reporters on Thursday that NEIGRIHMS will take measures to fulfil the criteria set by the Medical Council of India.
When asked about the shortage of doctors at the institute, Sangma said the State needs to produce its own specialists and for that it should have its own medical college and hospital.
The chief minister, however, said the two proposed medical colleges – Shillong Medical College and Tura Medical College – could not take off.
For Shillong Medical College, the problem was due to the delay in shifting the patients from Reid Chest (TB) Hospital, and for Tura, there were logistical problems, he said.
The new Reid Chest Hospital at Umsawli is almost complete and the Health Department has been asked to start the process of shifting patients at the earliest, he added.
For Tura medical College, the chief minister said the new land has been identified and the detailed project report has been submitted to the Union Government for consideration.
