Shillong, May 11: West Jaintia Hills District Sports Association and St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School will clash on Saturday in the boys’ final of the Assam Rifles CAPF Under-19 Football Talent Hunt Tournament for Meghalaya after both came through their semifinal fixtures here on Thursday.
On the back foot throughout the entire contest, West Jaintia Hills held their nerve in a tense penalty shootout to win 4-3 against Nongstoin District Sports Association after full time ended 1-1.
St Anthony’s meanwhile pulled off their third consecutive victory from a goal down, defeating Wahingdoh FC 3-1 with a thrilling display of football.
Nongstoin had the advantage in the tiebreaker, with the opposition missing a couple of spot kicks, but disaster then struck for the boys in yellow with three consecutive misses of their own, which saw the match end in favour of the elated West Jaintia Hills team.
In the other game, Wahingdoh had a distinct height advantage over St Anthony’s but could not make that count.
Wahingdoh will take on Nongstoin in a third-place playoff on Friday at 1:30pm. Prior to that will be the girls’ third-place match at 7:30am between Tyrsad Higher Secondary School and Laitkor SC.
The match of the day, however, will be the girls’ final between Umsning SC and East Jaintia Hills District Sports Association, to be played at Third Ground, Polo, at 3:45pm.
