TEZPUR: The banned ULFA-I is recruiting youths from different parts of Assam, its Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay on Friday said.
“ULFA-I is still recruiting youths from different parts of Assam and its commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah is conducting it from Myanmar,” the DGP said while interacting with media on the sidelines of a high-level security meeting at Army’s 4 Crops Headquarters here.
Referring to action against other militant outfits in the state, he said operations against National Democratic Front of Bodoland(Songbijit) is on in Sonitpur district as well as across Assam.
The combing operations against militants have been intensified ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Assam later this month, he said. “Following anti-insurgency operations in Bangladesh extremist groups such as Jamatul Mujahaddin, ULFA-I and NDFB-S may try to create disturbance in the state.
The security forces look into the matter very seriously,” the DGP said adding close circuit cameras would be installed on the streets in Guwahati within two weeks.
The DGP said there were several security lapses in the M P Jewellers showroom in Guwahati where dacoits in a daring heist took away gold jewellery weighing seven to eight kg on May 9. Chief Secretary V K Pipersenia reporters said that if any government employee is disturbed by the behaviour of their superior officials or may have been deprived of their rights, they should contact him or DGP special branch and not use social media platforms to air their grievances.
The security meeting was held in view of the May 26 visit of the prime minister and the threat perception from militants. It also discussed border-related issues between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh as well as Nagaland, official sources said. (PTI)
