Shillong: Known for walking across the city without a care in the world Lou Majaw, Meghalaya’s own singing legend, musician, song writer and winner of several awards, turned 70 on April 14 this year but looks the same as he did ten years ago when he walked from Guwahati to Shillong to demonstrate the importance of healthy living.
This time Lou Majaw is walking from Shillong to Jowai on May 18 where he will perform at the District Library at Mynthong on May 20 for the people of Jowai.
“This year my birthday coincided with Good Friday and so I put off the celebrations at the time. Now I will be performing at Jowai on May 20 from 7 to 9 pm as a curtain raiser for the 21st when I will be performing at the State Central Library, Shillong.” Lou said.
The veteran musician said that on May 21, he would be performing for the students of Bethany Society, Mary Rice Centre, Jyoti Sroat School for the Blind, Dwar Jingkyrmen, the shelter homes, Jaiaw Orphanage, Boy Scouts and Homes for the Aged as well as other educational institutions.
On May 24, which is Bob Dylan’s 76th birthday, Lou will be entertaining guests at Café Shillong, his regular haunt, from 3 to 5 pm.
When asked what he message he wanted to convey by walking from Shillong to Jowai, Lou said, “ I am walking for health and Peace. It’s very important to live a healthy life for the mind, body and soul. I believe in disciplined living which is as important as having healthy food.”
Chatting with this correspondent at the office of The Shillong Times, Lou Majaw said he grows his own vegetables in his backyard and has patches for all kinds of herbs and vegetables.
“Gardening is a very healthy activity and to be eating the food you have grown brings great satisfaction,” Lou said adding that his own good health is due largely to this healthy lifestyle.
Lou Majaw is a rarity and has been a role model for many budding musicians. He has taken quite a few musicians from here to different cities of India to perform.
In fact Lou Majaw’s is a popular name among musicians and music lovers in this country and abroad.
