SHILLONG: The Khasi-Jaintia Farmers’ Association (KJFA), a registered farmers’ body in the State, has petitioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi for waiving loans of farmers for three years in Meghalaya.
In a letter to the PMO, the KJFA said that it had convened a meeting on March 13 to discuss the various problems faced by the small and marginal farmers of the State, especially those who have to repay loans, due to bad harvest as a result of repeated natural calamities during last few years and requested the PM to waive off loans as has been done for the farmers from few other parts of the country.
The farmers’ body said it had also submitted memorandum to the Meghalaya Governor on the issue but could not meet Chief Minister Mukul Sangma due to the latter’s frequent absence from station.
