NONGSTOIN: The KSU, West Khasi Hills district unit has secured support from traditional heads to oppose setting up of a BSF camp.
Though the State Government had assured that there was no intention to set up the base camp, the BSF officials along with the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills, Arunkumar Kembhavi visited the site at Sohparu village near Nongkhnum River Island, but could not get any assurance from the traditional heads.
The KSU, West Khasi Hills district led by its president John Fisher along with the members of the KSU on Monday met the Sordar Shnong of Sohparu and the land owners to discuss the proposed BSF camp at Sohparu.
They asked the Sordar and the land owners not to allot land to set up the BSF camp. The KSU also told the Sordar that recently they had opposed the plan of BSF to set up a camp in Nongstoin.
The Sordar of Sohparu Gentliroy Marwein assured the KSU delegation that he would not give NOC.
The land owner N. Nongdkhar also said he is happy with the decision of the Sordar.
The Sordar said he was unaware of the BSF’s move to set up a base camp, which according to him will affect the tranquility of the area though there is assurance from the force that the area will be developed.
The KSU president said that the BSF officials and Deputy Commissioner were to conduct the site inspection to setup the base, but the Sordar did not turn up after they waited for hours.
“We want to send a clear message that there is no place for BSF camp in West Khasi Hills,” Nongsiang said.
