SHILLONG: A group of Garo organisations has urged the Government to build a permanent fire station in Tikrikilla and set up a police station near Phulbari in the wake of rising crime in the region.
The United Peace and Developmental Forum and the Tikrikilla unit of GSU, in a joint memorandum to Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh, offered 2 bighas of land for building a permanent fire and emergency services unit.
The Tikrikilla Fire and Emergency Services sub-station, which is in a shambles, is temporarily stationed at Kathalbari village.
The sub-station also lacks proper infrastructure and inadequate emergency tackling equipment.
The land that the organisations have offered is beside the AMPT NEC Road at Baghpara at a distance of 1 km from Tikrikilla police station.
The organisations also demanded that a police outpost be set up at Gaptuli Forest region, which is located between Phulbari police station and Bogularbhita Border outpost near Assam border.
The organisations said there are several cases of theft, kidnapping, extortion and dacoity. The area also witnesses frequent man-animal conflicts.
