FKJGP condemns Centre over beef ban

SHILLONG: The FKJGP central body has condemned the decision of the Central government to ban cattle slaughter asserting that the policies of the Centre is opposed to the lifestyle of the people here.
In a statement to the press on Sunday, the organisation criticised BJP vice president, J.A. Lyngdoh, for his statement that the ban on cattle slaughter will not affect the cattle market in Meghalaya.
The pressure group issued the statement in the wake of the ban on the sale and purchase of cattle from animal markets by the Central Government recently.
The Environment Ministry has notified the stringent ‘Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017’ under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
According to the notification, the member secretary of an animal market committee will have to ensure that no person brings young animals to the animal market.
Meanwhile, in a press statement, John F Kharshiing, Chairman, Ka Dorbar Ki Khlieh Nongsynshar Ka Ri Hynniewtrep, has urged the people from the state government to oppose the law of the Central government.
The law on Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017, implemented from May 23 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, central government has violated the rights of the people in the Khasi Jaintia and Garo Hills, he added.
