SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills Police will now lay focus on its police personnel to behave in the best possible manner with the public. Previously, a soft skill programme was organised for the traffic constables to teach them on how to behave with public and now similar programmes will be held for the police personnel of the District. East Khasi Hills SP, Dav is Marak, while admitting many people are reluctant to visit Police Stations pointed out that the police are making efforts to ensure that the official behave in their best while dealing with public.”Even if we are maintaining law and order we have to behave properly with public,” he said. Asked about the poor infrastructure in police stations, the District Police chief maintained that a lot of importance is being given on the cleanliness of station houses including the lockups. The lock up of the Sadar Police Station is quite clean and there are some photos of religious icons and others which may even give a sense of repentance to the criminals. “Police stations in Shillong are more approachable than other rural areas,” he added. The Police department is also in the process of upgrading its infrastructure but the problem comes up since some of the Beat Houses like Jhalupara Police Outposts and Cantonment Beat Houses are on rent, and both the beat houses are in bad shape. The department has also hold discussions with the Shillong Cantonment Board and even the Army authorities to give them a new location for setting up of new Beat Houses in the Cantonment areas.
