SHILLONG: Several State BJP leaders want the Centre to withdraw the notification on cow slaughter with the saffron party’s Meghalaya vice president and spokesperson JA Lyngdoh even threatening to quit the party if the demand was not accepted.
Some BJP leaders met here on Monday and took the decision to press the Centre to revert its decision on the issue of “beef ban”.
A party source said that the meeting decided to register its protest with the Centre through BJP national spokesperson Nalin Kohli, who is in charge of Meghalaya.
The meeting felt that with election round the corner, such a notification restricting cow slaughter will affect the poll prospects of the party in Meghalaya where the BJP is aiming big.
When contacted, the vice president and State spokesperson of BJP, J A Lyngdoh, said that if the Centre does not withdraw the notification, it would be better for him to quit the party.
“Many in the party in Meghalaya are opposing the Central decision. If the Centre does not listen to us, I don’t have any other option but to leave the party,” Lyngdoh asserted.
Lyngdoh, a former minister, feels that no authority has the right to interfere with the eating habits of people.
Earlier, Tura District President of BJP and former ANVC-B chief Bernard N Marak had said the Centre should not dictate dos and don’ts in Meghalaya regarding cow slaughter.
Marak had also claimed that the price of beef and other meat will come down in the State if the BJP is voted to power.
