SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills district administration has asked all line departments to be on alert in the wake of Cyclone Mora that hit Bangladesh on Tuesday morning bringing incessant rain to Shillong and other northeastern states.
Deputy Commissioner P.S Dkhar said departments, including the Fire and Emergency Service, police, MeECL and the PWD, have been asked to be prepared for any untoward incident.
No casualty was reported on Tuesday. A part of a tree broke near the Raj Bhavan office but the Forest Department cleared the road soon after.
“We have mainly alerted PWD based on our last experience of some landslides, especially in rural areas,” Dkhar said.
The India Metrological department (IMD) has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in isolated places on Wednesday and heavy rain is likely to occur in isolated places in Assam and Meghalaya on June 1.
The IMD report also adds that “squally winds with a speed of 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph” will blow over South Assam, Meghalaya and Manipur in the next 24 hours.
Cyclone Mora has already resulted in the death of at least six persons in Bangladesh on Tuesday morning.
