SHILLONG: UDP chief Donkupar Roy on Sunday said that failure of the Congress has resulted in the resurgence of BJP and not due to UDP-HSPDP alliance.
In response to the views of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma that UDP-HSPDP truck was a backdoor alliance with BJP, Roy said, “I am amused by the views of the chief minister, a veteran politician, that UDP is in a backdoor alliance with BJP. We believe either in pre-poll alliance or post-poll alliance and there is nothing like backdoor or front door alliance,” he said.
According to Roy, the chief minister is very desperate after the formation of the UDP-HSPDP alliance.
“As everyone knows, we do not have any pre-poll alliance with BJP. Why should Sangma blame regional parties for the rise of the BJP,” Roy asked.
The former chief minister said it is the failure of the Congress party that gave rise to BJP both at the Centre and other states.
“Look at the example of Assam where many Congress leaders shifted to BJP. Here in Meghalaya too, we are beginning to see the exodus of Congress men to BJP. Even in my Shella constituency, the Congress men are joining BJP. From Sohra too, the former Congress legislator, Dr PW Khongjee, joined BJP,” he said.
Roy reiterated that it is not UDP that is encouraging BJP but it is because of the failure of the chief minister and his party that their members are joining BJP.
“In national politics, the Congress failed resulting in BJP forming the government, but in Meghalaya, we hope that the regional alliance will win the 2018 polls,” he said.
