SHILLONG: An “innocent” rapist of a teenager wanted to come to a compromise with the family of the victim who is still recuperating in a city hospital.
Kervinson Sohtun, who allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl on May 28 after drugging her, and his family met the victim on Friday to apologise and cut a compromise deal.
At a time when the State has seen a surge in crime against women and children, the police’s insensitivity in this case was stark.
The women police personnel who interrogated the victim allegedly told her, “The man (the rapist) is an innocent and good person.”
However, the girl’s relatives said, “Why would he apologise if he did not commit the crime?”
Sohtun called up the girl on May 28 and identified himself as someone else. But later it was found that the number was of Sohtun from the same village.
Agnes Kharshiing, president of CSWO, said, “It is the insensitivity of the police to say that the rapist is innocent and good.”
