SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) accused Chief Minister Mukul Sangma of dividing and weakening the voices of opposition to the railway project in the State.
Reiterating their objection to the railway project, KHNAM, in a statement to the media, said the claim of the Government to come up with suitable measures to tackle influx “is to befool the public”.
The party alleged that the Government has not been able to detect or deport illegal immigrants. It claimed that the effectiveness of the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Bill 2016 and the Meghalaya Benami Transaction Prohibition (Amendment) Act 2016 to tackle the issue of influx is ambiguous.
KHNAM has called for the implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) terming it as the only measure that can tackle influx in the State.
KHNAM also demanded that the Chief Minister scrap the railway project till a complete law is framed to tackle illegal immigration in the State.
