Churches, others stress on need to redeem environment

SHILLONG/JOWAI/NONGSTOIN: Churches, various organisations, institutions and social bodies have called for redeeming the environment from any further peril.
They stressed on the need to protect the environment in the recently concluded celebrations.
The Bhanam Evangelistic Association and Mission Society (BEAMS), the Church Elders of Lum Rapleng, members of Mawmuthoh Presbyterian Church and the students of Shekinah Public School joined hands to celebrate World Environment Day on Monday. The event took place on the Shekinah Academy campus in Mawmuthoh.
The objective of the programme was to educate villagers and youths on the importance of preserving and protecting the environment. Participants planted over a hundred tree saplings on the occasion.
Power Grid initiative
Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, North Eastern Region, celebrated World Environment Day in the city on Monday. To mark the occasion, an essay competition was organised for the employees. Children were encouraged to participate in painting and essay competitions on the topic ‘Connecting to Nature’. Sapling plantations were carried out at the regional headquarters in the city as well as the site establishments of the Corporation in other northeastern states.
Jowai goes green
The Mynso Presbyterian Church, West Jaintia Hills, organised various events as part of its World Environment Day celebrations. An essay writing competition on the theme ‘The role of youths in preserving environment’ was held on Saturday and a seminar was held on Monday on the theme ‘Environment is God’s gift, protect it’. Students, villagers and church elders attended the seminar that was lead by Rev. H.C.T Sumer. Prizes were distributed to the winners of the essay competition.
Mission will bear fruit
The West Khasi Hills district administration celebrated the day by distributing saplings of fruits-bearing trees to over 1,800 schools in the district. Each school got five saplings under the Green Mission of the Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood Programme.
Art, like graffiti, painting and drama, was also a part of the events to create awareness among the youth.
The district will also undertake afforestation programme in June. Nearly 2 lakh saplings will be planted in different communities, villages, river catchment areas and along the 152km National Highway and state roads.
In another programme on the theme ‘Connecting People to Nature’ at DRDA Hall in Nongstoin Circuit House, there was a lecture on climatic changes.
