Marriage case disposed of after amendment

SHILLONG: With the State Government amending the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012, the pending petition was withdrawn during the hearing of the matter in the High Court of Meghalaya on Friday.
In this context, the petition was disposed of, but the court said the issues related to the subject matter of the writ petition will remain open for examination by the court if needed.
Earlier in March, the Government had assured to simplify the rules of the Marriage Act and also welcomed suggestions from any quarters while framing the rules.
During the hearing of the case, the counsel for the petitioners submitted that in view of the amendment of the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012, the cause as sought to be addressed in the petition does not survive, and therefore, the petitioners do not want to proceed with the petition, which is rendered infructuous.
The counsel for the State Government and the Centre also had similar views.
