SHILLONG: The response to Aadhaar enrolment, which began in the city last week after much delay, has been overwhelming so far with over 200 people coming everyday for registering their names.
Last week, the footfall for the enrolment at Mawlai was 200-250 a day.
Sources said the process has also started in the Meghalaya Secretariat and more than 100 employees have come forward for enrolment on their own.
Aadhaar enrolment will start in other government offices too.
According to sources, the implementing agency will need around 33 teams and they are required to hire some more people after which the enrollment process will be expedited.
Aadhaar has become necessary because it has been made mandatory for almost all government works though Meghalaya has been exempted in some cases.
Now the Central Board of Direct Taxes has also made it clear that Aadhaar card will be mandatory for filing income tax returns and applying for Permanent Account Number (PAN) from July 1.
Responding to a query, sources said teams will be sent to block headquarters from June 15 and those who want to enroll have to come to the block development office.
The Government is targeting to cover around 60-70 per cent of the population by the end of this year.
