SHILLONG: The Public Works Department will finalise the name of the consultant for construction of a new Assembly building in a week.
The High-Powered Committee of Meghalaya Assembly has empowered PWD to select a consultant based on merit.
Speaking to The Shillong Times after the meeting of the committee here on Monday, Speaker A.T Mondal said, “After the consultant is finalised, designing and tendering process will start and we hope to start the construction work by September this year.”
Mondal further informed that the State Government has earmarked around Rs 20-25 crore for this year. “Next year there will be more allocation since the project will extend for two-three years,” he said.
Nine firms had presented their architectural designs before the committee in the presence of technical staff earlier this year.
The building will come up in New Shillong in Mawdiangdiang and the required land has been allotted for the purpose.
The 125-year-old structure that housed the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly was destroyed in a fire in 2001. The Assembly is temporarily conducted from the Art and Culture Hall at Rilbong.
