Daily wager’s son clears JEE (Advanced) in Odisha
Kendrapara (Odisha): A daily wager’s son from a village in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district has cleared the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced), clinching 582 rank in the Scheduled Caste (SC) category. Bikash Das, who belongs to a family that comes below the poverty line, has secured 582 rank in the SC category, and is now eligible for a seat in the IIT. His father, Bijoy Das, said, “Bikash never studied in an English medium school. He received his education at the primary and high school in the village and was good in academics.” “I am a farm labourer. I toil in the field to earn my livelihood. Despite severe fiscal constraints, I prioritised my son’s education. From his primary school days, he showed brilliance in studies in Manapur upper primary school. I saved money for his studies. I am really happy now,” Das said. “My father is my inspiration, guide and philosopher. He sweated it out to financially support me in my studies. He never made me feel the pangs of poverty. Whatever I have achieved today is only because of him,” Bikash said. “Parental support with hard work has paved the way for my success. I never believed in shortcuts to achieve success,” he said. DU’s first cut-off list for UG courses to be released on June 23
New Delhi: The Delhi University’s first list of candidates for admission to its undergraduate programmes will be announced on the evening of June 23. Initially, the date fixed for release of first cut-off list was June 20. Although the university had announced that it would release six cut-off lists, dates of only five have been announced so far. More cut-off lists would be announced depending on the vacancy. After the first cut-off list is announced on June 23 evening, admissions would begin the next day, a release from the office of the Delhi University registrar said. The dates for release of subsequent cut-off lists are July 1, July 7, July 13 and July 18. Verification of documents and approval for admissions will be done between 9.30 am and 1.30 pm for morning colleges and 4 pm to 7 pm for evening colleges. “After approval of admission, the applicant has to log on to undergraduate admission portal for online payment of admission fee,” the release said. Man beats up wife, pours acid on her demanding more dowry
Kollam (Ker): A man in Alapuzha district allegedly beat up his wife demanding more dowry and poured acid on her causing grievous injuries. According to a statement given to police by the 31-year- old woman, her husband and mother-in-law used to often quarrel with her and torture her for not bringing in enough dowry. The woman claimed that at the time of her wedding, nine years ago, her parents had promised to give Rs two lakh in cash and 20 sovereigns of gold as dowry. But they could give only gold and due to that she was tortured. On June 6, the woman’s husband allegedly hit her on the head with a firewood and as she lay on the floor with blood oozing out, he threw acid at her, police said. Though she managed to protect her face, acid fell on her ears, neck and back causing burn injuries. She was taken to a taluk hospital by her mother whom she had called for help, they said. On the basis of the woman’s complaint at a police station in Kollam on June 10, her husband and mother-in-law was booked for cruelty and causing grievous hurt by use of acid, police said. (PTI)
79 Indians invited to France as language assistants
New Delhi:  A total of 79 Indian students have been selected for the French Education Ministry’s English Language Assistants programme that will see participation of 60 countries. The programme will start in October 2017 and end in May 2018, according to a statement from the French Embassy and the Institut Français India (IFI) here on Thursday. “In the framework of their bilateral cooperation in education, France and India have agreed to support the mobility of students, encouraging the internationalisation of their higher education training courses,” it said.Students taking part in this 20-year-old teaching programme will be assisting English language teachers in primary, secondary and higher secondary schools by offering them an understanding of the language throughout the whole academic year.The 79 students have been selected on the basis of their expertise in both French and English. “The programme provides a unique opportunity to Indian students who have already acquired a high level of French language competence and to have a first professional experience in the French academic milieu,” IFI Attache for Cooperation in Education Marie Doublier told iANS.
