SHILLONG: Aggrieved residents from five villages under Mawkynrew constituency, who were allegedly cheated by three persons under the pretext of Central Scheme, have asked the State Government to intervene into the matter.
As many as 40 villagers of the Constituency had alleged that the branch manager of Meghalaya Rural Bank in Smit, along with a Sordar and a woman cheated them by withdrawing lakhs of rupees as bank loans in their names.
Speaking to media persons here on Friday, the villagers also lamented that police is taking the matter lightly and the progress of the investigation is near to zero. They had filed a case against the trio on May 27, however, no arrests were made till date.
One of the victims of the alleged frauds, Abrington Dkhar, a resident of Mawiapbang village, recalled that the Sordar had asked them to open an account at Meghalaya Rural Bank, after which they would receive a grant of Rs 10000 under a Central Scheme. “Till date I have not received any money instead I have learned that a loan of Rs. 2.5 lakh have been taken under my name,” he said.
He further informed that during the opening of the account, the Sordar of Mawiapbang, Kyrshiej Nongrum, Branch manager, A. Kharmuti and a woman by the name Timil Pyngrope have asked him to sign some documents.
Dkhar stated that most of them are farmers and uneducated, “I am just a farmer and uneducated and the documents the Sordar asked me to sign were in English, and even before signing the documents I had asked the Sordar and branch manager about the contents, and they reiterated that it is a scheme for the farmers sanctioned by the Central Government,” he said.
He further informed that on May 5, the affected villagers have given their statement before the Meghalaya High Court. “More than 150 people from five villages in Mawkynrew constituency have been cheated by the trio.” Dkhar added.
