Three killed as two trucks collide in Assam
Jorhat (Assam): Three persons were killed and as many injured when their pick-up truck carrying newspapers collided head on with another truck in upper Assam’s Golaghat district early on Wednesday, police said. The accident occurred at Sabjuri under Bokakhat police station when the pick-up truck was travelling from Guwahati to Jorhat. Three persons were killed on the spot while the injured were first taken to a hospital in Bokakhat from where they were referred to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, police said. The vehicle was carrying Guwahati edition of a Kolkata based English newspaper for distribution in Jorhat. (PTI)
NCW seeks report on crime against women in Tripura
Agartala: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has expressed concern about the “high rate” of crime against women in Tripura and asked the director general of police to submit a report on it. A three-member delegation of NCW led by its member Sushma Sahu on Tuesday visited the state and talked to many victims and their family members. “I have spoken to the DGP, A K Shukla, and asked him to submit a report on crime against women in the state to the commission immediately. If he fails to submit the report, he would be summoned to the commission in Delhi,” Sahu told reporters here on Tuesday night. Sahu said, “The commission recently received 15 cases of heinous crime against women (from Tripura) and it seems that the Left ruled state administration preferred to remain silent on the issue.” (PTI)
Mizoram unit of GJM holds demo for Gorkhaland
Aizawl: The Mizoram unit of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) on Wednesday staged a demonstration here demanding a separate ‘Gorkhaland’ state carving out of West Bengal. Members of the state committee of the GJM in the sit-in demonstration displayed placards in support of ‘Gorkhaland’ comprising Darjeeling hill region, Siliguri, Terai, Dooars and surrounding areas. GJM leaders said that the Gorkhas living in India became Indian citizens in accordance with the Treaty of Sugauli, 1874. “We the Gorkhas are always mistaken as foreigners due to the fact that we do not have a separate state of our own in the country,” they said. They appealed to the people of Mizoram to support the demand for a separate ‘Gorkhaland.’ (PTI)
Nagaland Assembly Secretariat notifies Presidential poll
Kohima: Nagaland Commissioner and Secretary of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and Assistant Returning Officer, Presidential Election 2017, Benjamin Newmai has notify the Presidential election. According to the notification Newmai informed that the poll for the office of the President of India will take place in the Annexe hall of the Conference Room of the Assembly Secretariat in Kohima. The Presidential poll is scheduled to be held on Monday, July 17 between 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The Returning Officer has informed all MLAs to “confirm action taken by return signal,” it said. (UNI)
