NONGSTOIN: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has demanded that Aadhaar enrolment in West Khasi Hills be stopped as the unique identification number is not mandatory.
A delegation of KSU members met Deputy Commissioner Arunkumar Kembhavi on Friday and expressed concerns over Aadhaar enrolment.
The pressure group members claimed that they received complaints that the enrolment process was sensitised in such a way that it was mandatory.
KSU has strongly opposed the pressure put by the district administration and demanded that the enrolment be stopped at once till the citizens of the State voluntarily accept Aadhaar as an identity number.
As per the Supreme Court’s interim order that Aadhaar is not mandatory for getting benefits under government welfare schemes.
The Finance Ministry has exempted residents of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Meghalaya, and citizens above 80 years from mandatory quoting of Aadhaar to obtain PAN cards and file tax returns. Kembhavi said the administration did not force any individual to enroll and no bank or institution in the district was asked to implement it.
When asked about rumours that students without Aadhaar were excluded from the scholarship, or a government servant will lose his salary and the bank will never accept to open their account without Adhar number, the Deputy Commissioner assured and said that he was not aware of such type of order.
The Un ion therefore demand the Financial institution (Banks), Colleges, Schools and department head in the District not to force anyone who is not willing to enroll and if they do so will face the consequences.
