TURA: The State Government is committed to creating opportunities for women in the weaving sector through technology and skill upgradation, Minister Zenith Sangma has said.
Addressing a gathering at an event at Garobadha in West Garo Hills on Saturday, the Sports and Youth Affairs Minister said, “Though weaving is linked to tradition there is a huge gap between demand and supply and therefore it becomes a good opportunity for earning livelihood.”
Sangma, along with Sericulture and Weaving Minister Clement Marak, distributed yarns and looms to 10 registered groups of weavers from Garobadha and Selsella at the event under the income generation programme that was sanctioned in 2015-16 to revive the tradition of weaving by women.
Marak urged weavers to keep alive the tradition and pass it down to the next generation. He called for improvement in quality of products with latest designs and technology and hoped that the programme would improve weavers’ standard of living.
Earlier, Director of Sericulture and Weaving, S.K Barchung said that the programme is aimed at raising the earning capabilities of the weavers. There are 30,000 identified weavers in the State, most of whom are from Garo Hills.
