SHILLONG: Former chairman of ANVC-B, Bernard Marak, will launch an awareness campaign under the Protection and Empowerment of Traditional Rights and Autonomy in the Hills by the end of this week.
In a statement issued to the media, Marak said this will be a social movement to make people aware of their rights, autonomy, reservation, protection and privileges.
According to Marak, the word ‘Hill’ is important in the Sixth Schedule as it has an autonomous significance and identity in the scheduled areas.
“The creation of Meghalaya is the outcome of the ‘Hill State movement’. People have forgotten the actual provisions of the Hill areas and the law of the land and hence it is time to awaken the people for their rights,” he added.
Marak said this will be a non-political movement to strengthen the traditional bodies under the provisions of the Agreed Text of Settlement and will function within the ambit of the Indian constitution.
