SHILLONG: The North Eastern Hill University’s Tura campus lacks several basic facilities with even the water supplied to hostels is unfit for drinking. This was observed by a delegation of the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) which visited the campus from June 24-25.
During the visit, the delegation, led by NEHUSU president Napoleon S Mawphiang, interacted with students of the campus, the representatives of the Post-Graduate Students’ Union, (PGSU) NEHU Tura campus and Pro-Vice Chancellor of NEHU Tura Campus G. Singaiah.
In a statement issued here on Monday, the NEHUSU expressed concern over the poor infrastructure in the NEHU Tura campus even as it highlighted the plight of post graduate students.
“The campus suffers from various developmental deficiencies and is lagging behind in many aspects,” the NEHUSU, which also inspected the hostels in the campus, said.
The delegation noted that water supplied to the hostels was dirty and unfit for consumption.
“The water in the NEHU Tura campus is directly drawn from the ground and supplied to the hostels without any treatment. This water is very dirty and unfit for consumption,” NEHUSU said.
Lack of sports facilities, absence of a stationary shop and a lone doctor on duty were among other issues plaguing the campus, the NEHUSU observed.
The students, according to NEHUSU, have expressed concern over the quality of education in the campus which has been made “a dump yard for unfit teachers”.
“The Union has decided to meet the Vice Chancellor and other officers to highlight the issues faced by Tura campus. The NEHUSU will also write to the Rector, the Visitor of the University, the MHRD and the UGC on the matter,” the NEHUSU statement added.
