SHILLONG: The State BJP has reiterated that many Congress leaders are willing to join the saffron party but they are not coming forward because they are bound by the anti-defection law.
BJP general secretary Bashailang Khongwir said on Wednesday things would be clearer in September after the last session of the Assembly.
Asked if most of the Congress leaders are willing to join the National People’s Party, he said people have their own choices but most of the Congress MLAs and ministers’ first preference is BJP.
“A few candidates from other parties will join us and most of them are from the Congress,” he said.
Responding to a query whether the UDP-HSPDP alliance with local regional parties is a threat for the saffron party, Khongwir said the alliance would in fact prove to be beneficial for BJP.
He alleged that the Congress is the mastermind behind all the political rumblings in the KHADC.
BJP is trying to keep the Congress at bay from forming the new Executive Committee in the council.
