TURA: A former chairman of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has been allegedly kidnapped in neighbouring Assam.
Cary Marak, who was also a Member of the District Council from Asanang constituency near Tura, left Shillong on Tuesday for Bongaigaon town in Assam on a business trip, said a member of his family.
“The last time he got in touch with me was from Guwahati when he called to say that he was proceeding to Bongaigaon and would take another 3-4 hours,” said the relative.
On Wednesday morning, he reportedly called up the relative, who did not wish to be named, informing that he was being held against his will and the kidnappers were demanding Rs 4 lakh for his release.
The amount was later scaled down to Rs 1 lakh and Marak’s family transferred Rs 70,000 through net-banking to the kidnappers’ account. But there was no information about the former MDC’s release till the filing of this report.
Marak had unsuccessfully contested the 2013 assembly polls from Phulbari constituency in West Garo Hills on NPP ticket.
