Guwahati: With the insurgent groups of the Northeastern states forming a banner organisation to operate against Indian forces in the region, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday  advocated that state police forces in Northeastern region as well as the central police forces worked on a common platform as a ‘Team Northeast’ to ensure security of the people of the region that is in the focus on new economic development agenda of the BJP-led NDA government.
Setting the ball rolling for the two-day 24th conference of North East DGPs/ and heads of Central Police Forces held here under the aegis Intelligence Bureau, he called for focus on building a technology driven smart police force in the region to defeat the design of insurgent groups which are getting more IT savvy every passing day to carry forward their anti-national designs. He said rising graph of cyber-crimes was also a concern.
“Installing an omnipresent sense of security among the people of the Northeastern states is must so that people can work in a peaceful atmosphere for the prosperity of the region that has been termed as the new engine (NE) of growth for the entire country by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Sonowal said.
Sonowal lauded the IB for taking initiative for facilitating coordination among police forces of N-E states and attributed it one of the reasons for waning activities of insurgents in the region. He, however, cautioned the forces against getting complacent.
The DGP of Assam Police, Mukesh Sahay while addressing the conference stated that the insurgents, arms smugglers, drug dealers and other criminals and anti-social elements consider the inter-state boundaries of the region as facilitators for their operations rather than a barrier.  He, therefore, mooted formation of a ‘Northeast Police Force’ to enhance technology-driven synergy and coordination in operation against insurgents and anti-social elements of all the N-E states.
The DGP lauded the growing coordination among N-E state police forces that has been instrumental on  putting militancy on the Blackfoot in the region.
He called upon the conclave to explore very effective ways to ensure fast coordinated action on the basis of intelligence shared among the state police forces in the region.
