SHILLONG: Security has been beefed up in the city following the recent spurt in cases of arson related to the protests against the Byrnihat railway project.
On Thursday, police personnel were seen manning different localities of the city. The cops also conducted checking of two wheelers.
East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak informed that cops are on the alert in view of the existing situation in the city.
Meanwhile, there were also reports that some people asked several shopkeepers in Iewduh to down shutters early on Wednesday. However, Marak said the police have not received any information in this regard even as he added that security is tight in Iewduh.
Shillong has witnessed several cases of arson since last one month, the most recent one being an attack in Lad Shyiap on Sunday night when two-wheeler borne miscreants lobbed a petrol bomb on a ration shop run by Shyam Singh in which four persons, three of whom were minors, sustained burn injuries.
