SHILLONG: Sanbor Shullai and Paul Lyngdoh, the legislators from South and West Shillong respectively, on Friday met Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh and asked him to take measures to stop narcotics trade in different Cantonment areas like Jhalupara and Mawbah.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Paul said there is lack of focus on the part of police in the area to contain the illegal activities.
“Police have turned a blind eye to all social evils like liquor, prostitution and drugs trade, which are running in the areas,” he added.

The delegation also lamented that the officers who are posted in the area are frequently transferred.
According to Paul, there is a need for police to step up its action against such illegal activities in the areas. The police were conducting registration of floating population in the area but it was stopped two years ago, he said.
On the other hand, Shullai told reporters that the minister has assured that there will be full cooperation on the part of the police to eradicate all menace, which exists in the areas.
“The minister assured that there will be regular interactions between Dorbar Shnongs and various awareness programmes will also be held,” he said.
It may be mentioned that liquor is also a huge menace in Jhalupara and Mawbah and drunken brawls are common in these localities.
The meeting was also attended by Dorbar Shnong and village councils, besides senior officers of the police department.
