WILLIAMNAGAR: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma inaugurated the Chiading police station in East Garo Hills on Tuesday.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion Sangma said there is a need to create a secure environment as peace and security precedes all development initiatives and therefore new police stations and police outposts are being created to ensure that the fruits of development reach every nook and corner of the State.
Meghalaya DGP S B Singh, who was also present on the occasion, said some pockets in Garo Hills region are still vulnerable due to militancy and sought people’s support to tackle the problem.
Earlier on July 3, the State Government notified the creation of a new police station at Chiading which will cover 79 villages including Samanda block headquarter in East Garo Hills which were earlier under the jurisdiction of Songsak and Williamnagar police stations.
The chief minister assured the people of the area that they can expect more development to follow. Referring to Direct Benefit Transfer (BDT) of all welfare schemes, he said the people of the area would no longer have to travel all the way to Williamnagar for bank transactions as with the presence of a police station, banks will now be willing to come forward to set up their offices in the area.
He also informed the gathering about the government’s decision to have lay-bye markets along the national highways in the state, adding that one such lay-bye market would be sanctioned for Chiading area.
