TURA: Chairman of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Boston Ch Marak resigned from his post on Friday and said that the Council could get a new executive committee any day now.
Speaking to reporters after handing over his resignation letter to Deputy Chairman and Darugre MDC, Metrinson G Momin to be forwarded to the Meghalaya Governor, Marak informed that the formation of the new executive committee was just a matter of time and that the Governor had asked them to give him the date.
“It is just a matter of time. It could be next week, maybe even Monday,” he said.
Reacting to earlier media reports that said he had quit the NPP on account of the passing of the much debated Garo Customary Law, Marak asserted that his leaving the party had nothing to do with the legislation. He said that the law had already been passed with the consent of both the opposition and ruling MDCs and that there was no question of his resigning due to it.
Marak also said that the collapse of executive committee was due to the resignation of former CEM, Denang T Sangma which had also prevented the budget from being passed in the GHADC.
Boston whose father is the elder brother of Late Purno Agitok Sangma, was elected on a NPP ticket from Nogorpara MDC constituency. He switched sides to the Congress camp shortly after the passing of the Garo Customary Laws codification Bill in the Council, this year, leading to the collapse of the NPP-BJP-GNC led alliance which was running the Executive Committee of the GHADC.
The Congress and its allies have projected Boston as the next Chief executive member of the GHADC. He has since been expelled from the NPP.
