Two held for ‘cattle smuggling’
SHILLONG: Two suspected cattle smugglers were arrested and 14 cows worth Rs 2 lakh were seized at Lynghat in East Khasi Hills, a statement released by BSF on Thursday said.The arrested men have been identified as Kaldinesh Singh (18) and Rasto Tangsong (20), both residents of Pynursla in East Khasi Hills. The statement also said in three other incidents at Purakhasia in West Garo Hills, Nayabazar and Lyanghat in East Khasi Hills seized 41 more cows worth Rs 6.5 lakh while being smuggled to Bangladesh. BSF has sought cooperation from local police as well as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to enhance operation against smugglers.In the last one week, BSF seized 196 cows and contraband items worth more than Rs 36 lakh.

Withdrawal of FIR against contractor sought
TURA: Villagers of Jetragre, Darengre, Rongasigre, Kamagre and others all under Chokpot along with the Chokpot Area Development Committee and the Garo Students Union (GSU), Chokpot Unit have urged the PWD Department to withdraw the FIR filed against a particular contractor. The contractor in question is currently engaged in the construction of the 17 kilometre long road from Chokpot to Jetragre village. The FIR was filed by the department after it was directed by higher authorities in Shillong, who said that shoddy work had been done on the road by the contractor.

Removal of transformers leaves villagers in darkness
TURA: The removal of power transformers by the MePDCL from as many as 20 villages in South West Garo Hills District is posing hardships to villagers especially school going children who are finding difficulty in preparing for their half yearly examinations. According to the people the transformers have been removed from Sulguri, Kumuli, Latigri, Bollonggre, Amjana and other interior villages without a replacement being put in place by the concerned authority.The villagers in their complaint to the SDO of MePDCL, Ampati Sub-Division have urged the official to look into the matter at the earliest and to make necessary arrangement so that power can be restored to their villages.

Shadap to contest from Ummulong
SHILLONG: Innocent Shadap will contest from Ummulong, I-Nartiang Assembly constituency. In a press statement, he said that he will contest the election after he faced difficulties in the constituency. He added that there is no C&RD Block and Civil Sub Division at Namdong, harassment of the poor.
