SHILLONG: Governor Banwarilal Purohit has fixed July 18 for the election of the CEM in GHADC during a special session, ending the imbroglio in the formation of the new Executive Committee.
The governor, in the order, also approved the Cabinet’s recommendation to withdraw the administrator’s rule.
The Cabinet had sought the approval of the governor for the withdrawal of administrator’s rule 25 days ago based on the letter of Boston Marak and 15 other MDCs who had claimed majority support to form the next Executive Committee.
The MDCs had projected Marak, a suspended NPP member, as their candidate for the post of CEM.
The governor had waited for the resignation of Marak from the chairmanship of the GHADC before withdrawing administrator’s rule.
Though the government had explored legal options, the governor did not change his stand that compelled Marak to resign from the post of chairman last week.
Marak, who is camping in the city, said his group is intact and hence will form the next Executive NPP has also claimed that it has the majority for forming the new Executive Committee.
The crisis in the NPP-led Executive Committee led by Denang Sangma surfaced after he resigned from the post on March 31 before facing the no-confidence motion brought by the Congress-led opposition.
Marak, who was the chairman, played a crucial rule in admitting the no confidence motion.
Later, the Cabinet recommended the imposition of administrator’s rule and on April 10, South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Cyril V.D Diengdoh was appointed the administrator of GHADC.
The swift action of the NPP led Executive Committee in passing the controversial Garo Customary Bill was cited as the reason for its collapse.
