SHILLONG: Information Technology Minister Ampreen Lyngdoh on Wednesday said the youth, instead of aiming for government jobs, should seek ways to be innovative and acquire skills in their respective areas of interest to survive the tough competition.
Addressing a gathering at the inaugural function of a national seminar on ‘Recent developments in Chemistry’ at St. Mary’s College, the minister said many young people believe that they would perish without a government job.
“Many young people don’t want to travel outside the state and that is where the problem lies. As for the development in Chemistry, we need to find out where our kids can go. Students should be involved in exposure to enable them to understand what they want to do with Chemistry,” she added. The former education minister lamented that the system of education prevailing in the country for decades would no longer be productive in terms of creating employment.
“We have to stop churning out hundreds of degree holders in our country, particularly in our State. We have to be able to train citizens to be innovative. We have to enable the students to create a niche for themselves irrespective of their stream of study,” she added.
She exhorted upon teachers to educate the youth by instilling in them the spirit of innovativeness and the zeal to learn to survive in a competitive market.
“Through such national seminars, students will be able to understand the level education prevailing in reputed national institutions,” Lyngdoh said.
Lyngdoh expressed concern that the State had no industry worth the name even as it was struggling to understand the different kinds of markets.
