SHILLONG: Jugalis (helpers) who were qualified for appointment in MeECL staged a demonstration on Thursday at Additional Secretariat parking lot in protest against the state government’s delay in issuing appointment letters to over 466 of them. They have resorted to a two-day agitation and are planning to take a resolution on future course of action on Friday.

The youth wing of Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has all along supported the jugalis in their move.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, KHNAM youth wing president, Thomas Passah said, “The resolution will be taken on Friday when everyone from across Meghalaya will arrive at the venue.”

He added that last month (June) when they held a rally, the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) secretary, Debojit Warjri, assured them that the appointment letters would be issued to them but till date noting had been done.

He said, “We did not get the opportunity to meet the Power Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar or the Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma.”

Passah also expressed concern that the merit list of selected candidates would lapse on August 2 while the appointment letters of the Jugalis were yet to be issued.

It may be mention that the candidates staged a demonstration in front of the MeECL gate demanding appointment letters from the State Government last year.

The appointments were promised to be done in phases – 336 appointments under Phase-I, 233 each for phases II and III.  Passah said that process of appointment of Jugalis under Phase II and Phase III is yet to take place.
