SHILLONG: The students’ union of Sohra Government College has flagged infrastructure problems and manpower crisis and sought the State Government’s help for better education.
In a statement to the media, members of the union said the step-motherly behaviour of the Government, particularly the Department of Higher and Technical Education, is hampering education.
Only two lecturers are running the show in the Education Department because one lecturer resigned two and a half years ago and another retired last March.
“It is really difficult for two teachers to run a department, especially with the implementation of the semester System. Also, a majority of us have opted for this subject if not for Honours but as optional paper. This has caused great hardships to the two teachers and has adversely affected our learning,” read the statement.
The union also said the college lacks infrastructure and students have to huddle in the class for space, especially in the monsoon. Adding to the woes is the higher secondary section that has been delinked with the college but classes continue in the same building.
Last year on August 18, the union had sent a memorandum to the education minister and met the higher authority of DHTE on the issues but other than promises nothing was done, the students claimed.
“We wonder what makes DHTE to take so long to fill these two vacant posts when there are many qualified teachers in the State. Why does it take so long for those in power to address the problem of congestion? Why those in charge of education don’t do their duty,” the statement read.
The union has demanded that the Government address the grievances fast.
