TURA: The new Congress-led Executive Committee of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council headed by Chief Executive Member Boston Marak is likely to have a deputy leader from within the party, sources said.
According to political sources, the names of Rongram MDC Ismail Marak, Tura MDC Rupert Sangma and rebel GNC MDC Wenison Marak are said to be doing the rounds for the position of Deputy CEM.
However, when The Shillong Times contacted Boston Marak he refused to divulge any details.
“I am on my way to Shillong to meet our party leaders. I can’t say anything now but if there is a demand for it (Deputy CEM) we will look into it,” said Boston.
Both Wenison and Ismail had defected from the NPP-BJP-GNC alliance with two other members triggering a crisis that led to the fall of the Denang T Sangma-led EC.
Wenison was a senior Executive Committee member who headed the land and revenue department of the Council under Denang.
Meanwhile, with the chairman’s post falling vacant after Boston resigned, political circles believe that the lone woman legislator, Congress MDC from Dengnakpara constituency Sadhiarani Sangma, will be the new chairman. She is the spouse of senior Congress minister Zenith Sangma, younger brother of the chief minister.
With the recent defeat NPP is unlikely to contest the upcoming election for the chairman’s position.
