SHILLONG: Road accidents are on the rise in East Khasi Hills District with the maximum number of such cases being reported under Mawryngkneng police station and Madanrting traffic branch.
Data provided by the Shillong Traffic Police reveals that in 2016, 50 instances of fatal accidents cases were reported in the district including 14 under Madanrting traffic branch.
46 people were killed in those accidents whereas 39 people were injured. The district also witnessed 393 non-fatal road accidents in 2016 in which 461 people were injured.
Here too, out of the 393 cases, 200 took place under the jurisdiction of Mawryngkneng police station. This year till April, 13 fatal accidents have taken place in the district in which 13 people lost their lives while 93 non-fatal road accidents have taken place in the district injuring 161 persons.
Speaking on the matter, SP (Traffic), NK Syiem said traffic personnel have been asked to stop and compound vehicles being driven recklessly.
In addition, the Shillong Traffic Police is also getting complaints that some youths are indulging in car stunts in areas like Jaiaw and Mawkhar in the late hours of the night.
“We have asked people to give us specific information so that we can catch such drivers,” he said.
While asking people to concentrate on road while driving, the SP said that cases of rash driving are more evident on weekends.
The traffic department is also concerned over the fact that the number of accidents involving two wheelers is on the rise in Shillong town.
The statement of the Shillong Traffic Police assumes significance as number of hit and run cases have been reported from all over the district including the capital city in recent times.
