SHILLONG: The State’s wait for Lokayukta may end this year, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has assured.
Sangma said the government had sought more names for the Lokayukta.
“Now that we have completed the exercise, the Select Committee will sit soon to decide on the matter,” he told media persons.
Initially five persons had applied for the post of chairperson of the Lokayukta and six for members’ posts. Later, the Search Committee called for more names and the same were forwarded to the Select Committee for consideration. The task of the Search Committee was completed in May.
The search panel submitted the first recommended list of names in April and later a second list was forwarded in May. The Lokayukta will have four members, besides the chairperson.
According to Sangma, the meeting of the Select Committee was postponed last time since some members were unavailable and “we don’t want to take the decision when some members are absent”.
The Assembly passed the Meghalaya Lokayukta Bill in March 2014 and later in October, the government approved the rules for selection and appointment of its chairperson and members.
