TURA: The North Garo Hills district administration has paid ex gratia of Rs 3 lakh each to the kin of the two persons who were killed “mistakenly” by army personnel in 2015.
Sweetbirth D Marak (30) and Elphius Momin (35) of Rajasimla were returning home on a two-wheeler on the night of November 26, 2015, when army personnel of the Rongjuli camp in Assam gunned them down mistaking them for militants. The two were killed near Konchikol under Kharkutta outpost.
Soon after the killing, there was mass outcry with NGOs as well as the general public condemning the incident and demanding action against the guilty army personnel. The district administration later ordered a magisterial inquiry with Additional District Magistrate David D Sangma as the head of the team.
Deputy Commissioner SC Sadhu handed over cheques of Rs 3 lakh to the families at his office on Friday.
