SHILLONG: The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has termed the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act 2016 and the Meghalaya Prohibition of Benami Transaction (Amendment) Act 2016 as laws without teeth. The organisation has asserted that the two laws are weak and cannot tackle influx.“These laws will overwhelm the indigenous communities and will not tackle influx,” HYC general secretary Robert Kharjahrin told reporters on Saturday. HYC is demanding Inner Line Permit and has threatened to implement it with the help of traditional heads.
On the issue of Benami Transaction Act, he said, “There are many ministers and officers who resort to benami.”
Kharjahrin said these entry/exit points are installed only for beautification but they cannot tackle influx. “We need check point centres and not facilitation centres,” he added.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had said the Government would set up facilitation centres at every railway station.
