Govt assures aid to Sohra college
SHILLONG: The State Government has assured to sanction Rs. 1.40 crore for construction of a class room and appointment of two education teachers at Sohra Government College.
The assurance came from the Higher and Technical Education Minister Roshan Warjri after Sohra College Students Union and local MDC Donevan Kharwanlang met the former here on Monday.
Kharwanlang later told reporters that the ban on coal mining has greatly affected the people of Sohra who can no longer send their children to Shillong for studies. According to Kharwanlang, there are around 922 new students enrolled in Sohra college, which has forced authorities to make 6-7 students sit on each bench inside the classes.
The funds will be sanctioned for the college under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) scheme.

GOC 101 area meets CS
SHILLONG: Lieutenant General DS Ahuja, General Officer Commanding 101 Area, called on Chief Secretary Y Tsering at his office on Monday to discuss a number of issues including internal security and disaster management.
Intelligence sharing and issues related to defence land encroachment were also dicsussed. In addition, a large number of issues related to welfare of ex-servicemen were deliberated upon. The GOC also stressed upon the need for speedy processing of ex-gratia payment for martyrs.

One abducted, released
SHILLONG: Unknown miscreants on Sunday abducted one Abdul Kalam in a vehicle from Umsohsun area. The miscreants also snatched cash Rs. 15,000 and a bank cheque from the victim who was abducted between 1-2 am and released around 4 am. Later, the miscreants also demanded Rs. 5 lakh from Kalam. One Celrence Jason Rajee has been arrested in this connection.

NPP office bearers
NONGSTOIN: The NPP formed its youth wing unit for Rambrai Jyrngam constituency recently. While Dancing K.Bani was named president of the unit, RL Nongrang is the vice president. Apart from other office bearers hundred other members were also enrolled. The party’s district president Setsing Dkhar and general secretary BS Kharlor welcomed the new members.

Four injured in accident
Shillong: Four persons sustained injuries after two vehicles collided head on in Sohryngkham, East Khasi Hills. The incident happened around 9.50am on July 24 when a private car heading to Jowai collided head on with another vehicle coming towards Shillong. The injured were rushed to Shillong Civil Hospital.

Missing
A mentally disabled person Asfaque Haque (32) of Laban went missing from Jackson Trace Road in the area on July 13. Anyone knowing his whereabouts can contact 0364-2222277, 0364-2223168 or 9774070078.
