SHILLONG: The central executive members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Thursday tore photographs of the 12 Cabinet ministers and threw the pieces into a tin container which had a photograph of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma pasted on it.
The words written on the container were “Use me, Minister MUA-II, Mukul Sangma.”
Explaining the action, HYC vice president Donboklang Kharlyngdoh said, “As an organisation, we will create awareness on cleanliness so we request the members to throw the torn pieces into the dustbin (container).”
General Secretary of HYC Robert Kharjahrin addressed the crowd that comprised central executive members. “We are announcing non-violent and peaceful agitations by following the instructions given to us by the district administration.”
“But there are black sheep in the government who are provoking the organisation and we condemn them,” he added.
Kharjahrin threatened that the organisation has thousands of ‘fiery’ members who are prepared to agitate if provoked and maintained that the blame will be on the chief minister.
Narrating the incident in which two members were arrested and later released during the black flag protest on Wednesday, he said, “They were charged on the ground that they were taking out a procession.”
He asserted that the black flag protest was held across the city and it is natural for the members to walk from one place to another carrying the black flags and not expect them to ‘fly like superman’ or ‘crawl like spiderman’ and that they have not compelled anyone to get black badges pinned on them.
He said, “We are taking a peaceful route so do not provoke us.”
Call for discussion
HYC has asked MLAs to join in the discussion on July 29.
Taunting the MLAs as disciples of the chief minister, Kharlyngdoh said the organisation is protesting against the adamant attitude of the government.
HYC President Peter Lawai said if the MLAs fail to come, then the organisation will not allow them to come to power in the next election.
