GUWAHATI: A court in the city on Saturday  remanded retired IAS officer and former director of the Social Welfare Department of Government of Assam, Dilip Borthakur to 14 days’ judicial custody on his production production before it.

The former senior official was arrested by sleuths of Anti-Corruption and Vigilance Cell from his city residence on Friday after he had remained absconded for about five months. He was arrested for his alleged involvement in a multi-crore sandal related to procurement sewing machines under a centrally-sponsored scheme of Assam’s Social Welfare Department during the previous Congress regime in the state.

Another former Director of the Department Kumud Kalita is still absconding. The investigating team has already questioned two former senior Congress ministers, Akon Bora and Gautom Roy, in connection with the scanda while several officials of the department have already been arrested and suspended  for their  alleged involvement in  the multi-crore scandal that is under investigation.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has maintained that the BJP-led government in the state will continue with its tirade against corruption and not one would be spared if found guilty of misappropriation of public money.
